I don't know the context of this, but I love the quote:

I wish I could believe this. But then I remember that people are more complicated than that.

Yes, people are more complicated. But I think Dr. Mayhew was talking in broader terms, as in a society or culture rather than individual humans.

Of course, you could still argue with that, since this country is waging war right this minute, at a time when animal rights have never been better publicized and protected...
