whatever happens

I just watched three movies:

Solarbabies is a grade-B postapocalyptic sci-fi with a bunch of kids on rollerblades as the heroes. It's old (1986), so most of you would probably find the whole thing rather tame. But it had an impressive cast for the time - Jamie Gertz, Jason Patric, Lukas Haas, Peter DeLuise, and Adrian Pasdar - and if you can deal with the cheesy 80s stunts and special effects, it's a fun film.

On another plane altogether is Mongol, the first of a planned trilogy on the life of Genghis Khan. It's primarily a Russian film, in collaboration with many other countries, and filmed in China (including Mongolia). The languages are Mongolian and Mandarin, so, subtitles. Since Shan Yu, I've been interested in the Mongols, which is why I watched it, and I'm glad I did. It's a weighty and extremely grim film, but fascinating.

And I watched The Man in the Iron Mask, just for fun, because I'm on a Jeremy Irons kick now.

I don't care what anyone says about The Man in the Iron Mask; I love it! Yeah, it's a cheesy plot, and pretty bad writing, and DiCaprio really needed a better director; but, as you say, it's good fun, and the combination of Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, and Gabriel Byrne ~ well, it doesn't get much better than that! Love Jeremy Irons' leather coat. Teehee.
