whatever happens

I rarely listen to critics about a movie, since my tastes are eclectic and eccentric. I only listen to the opinions of friends, family, and other people who have somewhat the same tastes as I do. And even then, I listen with a grain of salt. I'm reminded of this because of a comment I posted on coastal_spirit about the latest Star Wars film, but also because of a movie I watched yesterday, an animated film called Strange Magic. This was a darling movie, lots of fun and beautifully animated, and it had a gimmick I've never seen before - the characters were revealed and enhanced, and the plot forwarded, using old pop and rock songs. My generation seems to have produced all the best popular music, btw, if you go by movies and advertisements. Anyway, the movie was great fun, but it was slammed by critics. They seemed to think it wasn't profound enough, that it had no important message. Picture Kat swinging a fist at these idiots. IMO, not so humble, the primary reason for the existence of movies is to entertain, and any insights, wisdom, or knowledge that's imparted through them is great, but it's the icing on the cake. I find the movies that most critics like are boring, nihilistic, and depressing. So there.

I so totally agree with this statement! I do often like (some) movies that the critics like, but just as often, I love movies that they slam. IMNSHO, I think that what one likes in entertainment is a matter of individual taste, and the emotional and intellectual makeup of the individual watching. We might look at a movie and say, "That's depressing", or "That's really stupid", but if that's what makes a person happy, then they should watch it. The critics are, after all, only individuals giving us their opinions, and unfortunately, getting paid for it. I think it's a shame that so many people take them seriously.
