whatever happens

Whew. I almost became a statistic today.

As some of you may know, we've had a LOT of rain in the past few days. Seven inches in some areas. It's been so dry for so long that the ground couldn't absorb it fast enough, so there was a lot of run-off. Still, I wasn't concerned when I left the house. The three back roads that I travel have never flooded in the 15+ years I've been driving them, even when it looked like all the rest of the world was under water.

Well, I was sure wrong to be complacent. On the first of those three roads, I hit a flooded spot. I didn't see it until I was right on top of it. I only had time to mentally say "Oh SHIT" before I was in it. I was going 50, and it was deep enough to slow me down to 30 by the time I'd gone a car length. I automatically drove it as if I were driving on ice - eased up on the accelerator to stay at 30, no faster, but no braking. Luckily, the dip is sharp and I have front wheel drive, so within a second or two, my front wheels were biting on road surface, and I was OK.

After that, you can bet I was being more cautious!! The next road was OK, but the third one... wow. I wasn't expecting that one to flood, since it's not on a creek and has no dips (like the first road is and does). But it was flooded so wide that, when I stopped short of the water (ta-dah!), I couldn't see the other side - it was wider than the reach of my headlights. Obviously, I turned around and took an alternate route.

Eek! I'm so glad that you came through this incident unharmed, Kat!
*huggles you* I'm glad you're okay. That must have been scary. ^^;;
